The Saami
The Saami followed the melting of the inland ice and entered Lapland for about 8000 years ago. Their origin area reaches from the peninsula of Kola to northern Norway, northern Sweden and northern Finland.
This area is called Sápmi (the land of the Laplanders). Today only 10% of the Laplanders make their living by care taking of the reindeers.

The reindeer
The reindeer is very common in Lapland. Almost all the reindeers are owned by the Lapps, but there are some wild reindeers too. In the winter their food contains mostly of lichen and in the summer they eat grass, leaves and mushrooms.
The reindeers are very important for the Lapps. It gives them meat and milk, skin for their clothes and horn for their handicraft.
